Victorian Mahogany Gateleg Dropleaf Table

19th century
Description

A rich early Victorian mahogany dropleaf gateleg table, standing on four turned legs of baluster form. One leg on each side is a gate leg which opens to support the fall, allowing for either one or both leaves to be extended.

A bold Victorian form with good proportions, equally suited to use as a casual dining table or console table.

Condition Report

The top has a few minor marks consistent with age and use. The deal carcass shows evidence of historic woodworm, now long gone. There are numerous old holes, but the table is absolutely solid.

Additional supports have been added at a later date. The table would originally have had castors, which have since been replaced with turned supports.

A solid, functional table.

The photographs form part of the condition report, so please review them carefully. Further images or a video viewing can be provided on request. Viewings are welcome at our Southampton unit, strictly by appointment.

If you have any questions regarding this piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

A Victorian gateleg dropleaf table is a space-saving dining or occasional table featuring hinged side flaps supported by leg assemblies that swing outward like gates when raised.

These tables were commonly crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring brass hinges and hand-turned wooden legs.

Authentic pieces feature period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on support frames, original brass drop-leaf rule joints, and turned leg profiles characteristic of 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Positioned against a wall with both leaves lowered, it serves as a narrow console table, or extended in a dining nook as an adaptable surface for smaller living spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly while keeping the table away from direct heat sources.
