Extremely Large 19th Century Georgian Mahogany Partners Writing Table

19th century
Description

A Very Good Quality And Extremely Large Regency Period, Early 19th Century Mahogany Partners Writing Table, Having Wonderful Replacement Gilt Tooled Leather Inset To Crossbanded Top, Over Three Frieze Drawers To Each Side, Flanked By Two False Drawers To Each End, With Replacement Brass Ring Drop Handles, Raised On Elegant Bold Turned And Tapering Legs.

This really is an exceptionally attractive and very imposing Regency period mahogany partners writing table, which is particularly unusual and desirable on account of its extremely large proportions. At over six feet wide and four feet deep, tables of this type and period are very rarely encountered in such generous sizes, especially retaining such an elegant and relatively simple design.

The table benefits from six useful drawers, three to each side, allowing two people to work comfortably opposite one another if required. An especially attractive and rather unusual feature is the inclusion of two false drawers to each end, which gives the table a wonderfully balanced appearance from all four sides and makes it particularly suitable for standing centrally within a room.

The replacement green leather writing surface is of superb quality, the highest grade of leather and finished with beautiful traditional gilt tooling. The intricate decorative borders and panelled design are extremely attractive and complement the rich mahogany colour and surface so well.

Despite its substantial size, the table retains a great deal of elegance thanks to the relatively shallow frieze and bold, yet nicely proportioned, turned and tapering legs. It would make a magnificent centrepiece for a large study, library or home office, whether in a traditional period property or a more contemporary interior.

Overall the condition is very good, with lovely colour and surface, together with the usual old marks, scuffs and minor imperfections associated with age and use, all blending in nicely. There is a slight dip to the centre of the table, but this does not detract at all from its overall appearance or practicality.

As with all items we offer for sale, this table has been carefully inspected and attended to in our workshops by our skilled traditional antique furniture restorers, before receiving an appropriate natural wax polish, ensuring it is ready for immediate placement within the home or office.

This Regency partners writing table is made from dark brown mahogany with a green leather writing surface. The piece has a crossbanded top, six frieze drawers, four false drawers, and round brass ring handles, supported on turned and tapering legs with mouldings. It stands 81 cm high, 192 cm wide, and 123 cm deep. Suitable for use as a central desk in a large study, library, or home office, the table allows two people to work opposite one another. The timber shows natural signs of age, including old marks, scuffs, and a slight dip to the centre of the top.

A partners writing table is a double-sided desk designed to accommodate two people working opposite each other, featuring frieze drawers or pedestals on both sides. Popularised in 18th- and 19th-century Britain, these large tables were traditionally used in commercial banking houses, law firms, and country house libraries.

Georgian writing tables were constructed from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, chosen for its density and dark grain. Tops frequently feature inset gold-tooled leather writing surfaces, while drawer fronts are fitted with cast brass handles and iron mortise locks.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on secondary timbers such as oak or pine drawer linings. Look for original cast brass backplates and handles, age-appropriate wear around the foot rim, and natural wood shrinkage along the frame.

Position the table centrally in a spacious room or library to allow dual-sided access and display its proportions. Balance the deep mahogany wood tones with contemporary neutral wall colours, minimalist task lighting, and modern upholstered seating.

Apply a clear beeswax polish to the mahogany surfaces once or twice annually, buffing along the wood grain with a soft cloth. Keep the inset leather clean using a dry cloth and specialized leather conditioner to prevent drying or cracking, avoiding direct exposure to heat sources.
