Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large four-fold screen is in the Chinese Chippendale style and dates from the period 1880 to 1900. It is constructed from wood and black lacquer with gold-coloured hand-painted decoration, and incorporates glass and metal hinges between the panels. Each folding panel features an arched glazed tracery window at the top, topped with a pierced fretwork frieze and pagoda cresting. The lower sections of the panels display Chinoiserie landscapes depicting pagodas, figures, trees, birds, and water scenes. Surface wear includes visible scratches and old repairs on the dark lacquer finish, while the glass panes remain intact and the structure is solid. The screen measures 210 cm high by 250 cm wide, with individual panels measuring 60 cm in width. It functions as a room divider or decorative backdrop in a gentleman's library, living room, or study, creating distinct zones within a contemporary home interior.

FAQs

Chinese Chippendale style emerged in 18th-century England as furniture makers integrated Asian motifs into Georgian designs, featuring pagoda top crestings, fretwork, and lacquered chinoiserie landscapes.

Coromandel screens are constructed using wooden panels covered with dark lacquer, into which detailed decorative designs are incised and painted with coloured pigments or leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces from the 18801900 period display hand-carved timber crestings, aged brass metalwork, hand-painted lacquer surfaces showing natural surface crazing, and traditional joinery techniques.

A four-fold screen can be positioned as a decorative backdrop behind seating, placed in an empty corner to add vertical structure, or used to define functional zones in open-plan rooms.

Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding moisture, solvents, or household furniture polishes, and keep the screen clear of direct sunlight and heat sources.
