Antique Chinese Carved Soapstone Scholar’s Vase Brush Washer Birds Animals Qing C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An unusually elaborate Chinese carved soapstone scholar’s table ornament, probably dating from the late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1900–1930.

Carved from richly variegated natural soapstone in attractive shades of reddish-brown, pink, ochre, cream, grey and black, this substantial piece incorporates a tall vase alongside a shallow circular basin or brush washer, surrounded by an intricate arrangement of carved animals, birds, pierced rockwork and naturalistic formations.

The composition is particularly notable for its extensive openwork carving and deeply undercut details, creating considerable depth and visual interest. Numerous creatures are positioned among the rocky landscape, with the natural colour variations of the stone providing contrasting tones throughout the sculpture.

The tall vase has a generously proportioned opening, while the smaller shallow basin is incorporated into the lower section of the carving. Together, these features suggest a decorative scholar’s table group, combining traditional vessel forms with an elaborate naturalistic composition.

The underside reveals the substantial stone construction, with the attractive natural veining continuing through the base.

A highly decorative example of Chinese soapstone carving, considerably more elaborate than the more commonly encountered single-figure carvings and simple brush washers.

This Chinese scholar’s table ornament dates from the Qing dynasty period around 1900. Carved from variegated soapstone in terracotta, ochre, grey, cream, pink and black, the substantial piece incorporates a tapered vase alongside a shallow integrated brush washer basin, surrounded by relief-carved birds, animals, pierced stone openwork, and naturalistic floral motifs. Surface wear, scratches, natural fissures, inclusions, chips to projecting elements, discolouration, and surface scratches on the base are present. The object measures 18 cm high, 17 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Suitable for an office desk in a gentleman's library, the sculpture provides an elaborate decorative element inspired by traditional vessel forms and intricate rockwork compositions. The piece rests flat on a desk surface, holding pens or serving as a display item within a study space or collection of scholar’s objects.

A brush washer is a traditional vessel used in a scholars studio to clean calligraphy and painting brushes during artistic creation.

Carvers frequently utilised soapstone, jade, bamboo, and hardwood, shaping natural variations in colour to accent carved relief patterns of flora and fauna.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-carved tool marks, natural age patina, variation in stone opacity, and undercut openwork typical of traditional stone craftsmanship.

Place the object on a timber desk, bookshelf, or console table alongside framed artwork and books to introduce texture and historical interest.

Dust gently using a soft-bristled brush or dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water immersion or harsh chemicals that could alter the natural patination.
