This nest of three occasional tables dates from the 1910 period in the Anglo-Chinese style. The group consists of hardwood furniture finished with a dark brown stain and wax, showing visible signs of age and wear including joints that need re-gluing. Each table displays relief-carved foliage borders, recessed panel tops, and faux bamboo turned legs. The largest table measures 59 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 31 cm deep. Placed at the end of a sofa in a gentleman's library or a living room, these tables provide flexible surfaces for everyday use. The graduated nested design allows the smaller tables to tuck neatly beneath the larger one when floor space is needed.

Nested tables, originally designed in the late eighteenth century by Thomas Sheraton, were created as practical space-saving furniture for drawing rooms and parlours. Sets crafted in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in East Asian styles were frequently produced as export goods for European households.

Traditional export nests of tables were constructed using dense hardwoods such as rosewood, padauk, or teak. The frames feature joinery techniques like mortise and tenon joints, accented with hand-carved relief borders and recessed panel tops designed to accommodate wood expansion.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs with subtle variations across each table in the set. Inspection of the undersides usually reveals hand-planed wood, traditional joinery without modern screws, and evidence of age-related wood shrinkage or oxidation.

A nest of tables can be displayed together as a staggered side table unit beside a sofa or separated throughout a room as individual plant stands and lamp tables. The dark wood finish contrasts effectively against neutral walls and tailored modern upholstery.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid spray polishes that create build-up in carved recesses. Apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the grain, and keep the wood away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
