This six-panel folding room divider dates from 1890 in the Rococo Revival style, constructed from wood with a deep red painted finish and gilt leaf decoration. The hinged panels display crested top edges with carved detail, gold scrollwork framing, and hand-painted scenes showing cherubs, classical figures, and urns. Signs of age include minor surface wear to the edges of the painted panels. The piece measures 193 cm high, 373 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. In a contemporary home, the screen serves as a functional room divider to separate spaces within a large open-plan living area, bedroom, or dressing room. It can also stand flat against a wall as a decorative backdrop or large-scale artwork to add a statement focal point to the interior scheme.

FAQs

Folding screens originated in ancient China before becoming popular decorative items in European interiors during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Often featuring hand-painted chinoiserie or rococo scenes, these screens served both functional purposes for privacy and draught management, as well as aesthetic purposes to display artistic craftsmanship.

Traditional multi-panel screens were constructed using wooden frames, stretched canvas, or solid timber panels. Decorative layers involved gesso, oil-based paints, lacquers, and gilded leafwork, connected by metal or fabric hinges designed to fold in alternating directions.

Authentic period painted screens display characteristic signifiers of age, including natural craquelure across painted surfaces, period-correct brass or iron double-action hinges, and visible hand-brushwork. Original hand-carved cresting along the top edge and subtle surface oxidisation further indicate historical origin.

A large multi-panel screen can be positioned behind a sofa or bed frame to serve as a dramatic decorative headboard or wall feature. Alternatively, designers place these screens in open-plan areas to create soft architectural divisions while introducing color and historical texture.

Maintain painted and gilded screens by dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Keep the screen away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber warping and lacquer flaking.
