This Japanese side table from circa 1920 is made from dark brown hardwood and styled for a gentleman's library. The piece displays intricate relief carvings of dragons along the curved apron, cabriole legs, and scroll feet, finished with decorative mouldings under the square top surface. On the table sit two teal-glazed ceramic vases adorned with green and white floral and dragon medallions, accompanied by loose green foliage resting on the wood surface. The table measures 36 cm high, 91 cm wide, and 73 cm deep. Suitable for placement at the end of a sofa or in a living room seating arrangement, the side table provides a sturdy surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects. The dark timber finish and elaborate carvings suit traditional or eclectic interiors. The structure is solid and stable, offering practical function alongside decorative interest for daily use in the home.

FAQs

Japanese furniture from the early 20th century, particularly the Taisho period, often blends traditional wood-carving techniques with decorative influences adapted for both domestic use and export markets.

These pieces are typically crafted from dense hardwoods using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, finished with dark stains or lacquers to highlight intricate hand-carved relief work.

Look for evidence of hand-carved details along the apron and legs, subtle tool marks on the underside, natural wood shrinkage around joints, and authentic surface patination consistent with age.

Position the piece as a focal accent alongside low-profile seating or within a neutral room scheme to allow the detailed timber carvings to contrast clearly with surrounding textures.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally, keeping the item away from direct heat sources, bright sunlight, and excessive humidity.
