This Georgian mahogany side table exemplifies classic English country house style with a warm brown tilt-top mechanism and a distinctive plum pudding timber grain. The circular top is supported by a finely turned central pedestal shaft that flows down into three slender, tapering cabriole legs terminating in smooth pad feet. The restored surface reveals a semi-matt shellac polish and a wax finish that highlights the rich natural tones of the wood. Measuring 72 cm high, 78 cm wide, and 79 cm deep, the table offers versatile placement options within domestic interiors. In a modern home, this practical piece functions ideally in an empty corner, hallway, or living room space. The tilt-top mechanism allows the table to stand upright when not in use, conserving floor space while displaying the decorative timber grain. The traditional tripod base provides sturdy support, making the table suitable for holding lamps, books, or decorative items when lowered into its horizontal position. The combination of period craftsmanship and functional design ensures the table integrates seamlessly into both traditional and contemporary room settings.

Emerging in the 18th century, tilt-top tripod tables feature a circular or oval top mounted on a central pillar with three cabriole legs, designed to snap vertically for space-saving storage against a wall when not in use.

Authentic examples were typically constructed from solid mahogany or walnut, featuring turned central shafts, hand-dovetailed catch mechanisms, and pad or claw-and-ball feet.

Look for hand-cut dovetails on the block mechanism, original iron or brass latches beneath the tabletop, and hand-planing marks or slight dimensional shrinkage across the wood grain.

Positioned beside an armchair as an occasional drink surface, or displayed with the top tilted vertically in a room corner to showcase the grain and figure of the timber.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent warping, clean with a dry microfibre cloth, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the direction of the grain.
