This Georgian lamp table is made from mahogany with a warm brown colour and a polished finish. The piece takes the form of a side table from around 1820, designed in an English country house style. The construction comprises an octagonal tilting top with a shallow raised gallery, supported by a finely turned central column and a tripod base with three splayed reeded legs ending in raised turned feet. The piece stands 74 cm high, 46 cm wide and 35 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table works well placed at the end of a sofa or in a quiet corner to hold a small lamp or decorative items. The compact footprint makes it practical for smaller living spaces while maintaining traditional proportions. The surface displays good colour and patina, and the table remains in nice condition throughout.

A Georgian lamp table is a small occasional table crafted during the 18th to early 19th centuries, designed to hold candles or early oil lamps. Typical designs feature turned central pedestals, tripod cabriole or splayed legs, and tops that are circular, square, or octagonal.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its density and deep colour. Construction techniques involved hand-carved pedestal turned spindles, dovetail joints on sliding battens, and hand-cut tripod legs hand-fitted into a central block.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-planing on the underside of the tabletop, irregular hand-carved turning on the column, and original iron underside bracing plates. The timber exhibits natural oxidisation, showing dark patination in recesses and lighter tones on flat surfaces.

Position the table beside a modern sofa or armchair to create a contrast between contemporary upholstery and historic timber finishes. Use it to display a contemporary desk lamp, ceramic vase, or curated stack of art books to anchor an empty room corner.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth following the natural direction of the wood grain. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina, avoiding silicones, aerosol sprays, and placement near direct heat sources or damp environments.
