This pair of tall bentwood hall stands by Thonet dates from 1910 and embodies the Art Nouveau style. Constructed from dark brown bentwood and beech, the stands feature turned central columns topped with beehive finials and crowns of eight large double hooks for hats and coats. Below these, small scurled hooks encircle the shaft, while a circular hoop stretcher at the four-legged base provides storage for sticks and umbrellas. Measuring 203 cm high, 53.5 cm wide and 53.5 cm deep, these hall stands suit placement beside the front door in a hallway or boot room. They function practically for hanging coats and storing umbrellas while introducing period character to an interior.

Bentwood hallstands gained widespread popularity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries following manufacturing innovations by Michael Thonet. The technique used steam to soften solid beechwood, enabling craftsmen to bend it into sinuous, organic shapes that defined Art Nouveau and Edwardian hallway furniture.

Traditional bentwood pieces are constructed primarily from solid beechwood. The timber is subjected to high-pressure steam, shaped around iron moulds, and allowed to dry, resulting in curved components assembled with hidden screws and internal bolts for structural stability.

Authentic pieces often retain paper factory labels or heat-stamped signatures, typically located on the underside of umbrella rings or near the central column joint. Original examples also feature smooth, continuous wood grain bends without cracks, along with period-correct brass or iron fixings.

A bentwood hallstand functions as a sculptural accent in modern foyers, hallways, or open-plan living spaces. Pairing the warm timber tones with neutral walls or minimalist stone flooring allows the curved silhouette to serve as a visual focal point while providing functional storage.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping or joint separation. Regular dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and an occasional application of beeswax polish will protect the original finish and timber hydration.
