Antique Victorian Aesthetic Movement Circular Occasional Table C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century occasional table, the circular top featuring an ebonised central panel within a golden satinwood border, set over four turned ebonised legs with incised gilt fluting, united by a turned X-stretcher centred with an urn finial and pendant drop.

Typical of the Anglo-Japanese influence of the Aesthetic Movement, the stark contrast between the ebonised frame, gilt details and shimmering satinwood border reflects the high design taste of the period.

Very good antique condition, showing authentic wear and minor surface rubbing consistent with age and handling. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1890.

This Victorian occasional table dates from circa 1890 in the Aesthetic Movement style. It is made from ebonised wood and beech with gold leaf, presenting a black and gold colour scheme with a shimmering golden satinwood border around the circular top. The piece stands on four turned ebonised legs with incised gilt fluting and curved feet, united by a turned X-stretcher centred with an urn finial and pendant drop. Authentic wear and minor surface rubbing appear on the dark frame. Measuring 59.5 cm high, 55 cm wide, and 55 cm deep, the table suits placement at the end of a sofa in a living room as a compact surface for lamps or drinks.

The Aesthetic Movement, flourishing between 1860 and 1900, focused on visual beauty and craftsmanship rather than narrative or moral storytelling. Furniture from this period frequently displays Anglo-Japanese influences, clean geometric lines, delicate turned wood elements, and dark ebonised finishes paired with subtle gilded details.

Victorian occasional tables were typically constructed using native hardwoods such as birch, beech, mahogany, or walnut. Makers frequently applied an ebonised stain and lacquer to imitate ebony wood, combining hand-turned spindles, finials, and cross-stretchers held together with traditional mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic period pieces show age-appropriate wear to the dark ebonised layer, often revealing the lighter timber beneath around high-contact areas like table edges and foot supports. Original construction features hand-fitted joinery, natural surface patination, and hand-applied gilding or painted accents rather than modern spray finishes.

A compact circular occasional table functions effectively as an accent piece next to a modern armchair or modern sofa. Its dark finish and graphic profile provide structural contrast against light upholstery and contemporary wall colours.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid sprays or harsh chemical detergents, and apply a light coating of natural beeswax sparingly once or twice a year to protect the timber without stripping the original ebonised finish or gilding.
