This nineteenth century French gentleman's walking cane dates to 1890 and is made from dark brown hardwood with metal hardware. The item has a curved crook handle incorporating a carved boxer dog head decoration with inset details, along with a metal ferrule at the base of the shaft. It measures 91 cm high by 14 cm wide and 3 cm deep, providing a standard walking support height for practical daily use. The polished timber shows a smooth finish along the elongated shaft leading down to a tip. In a contemporary home, this walking stick suits placement beside the front door for everyday use or display in a library among collections of walking sticks and canes. The decorative carved handle provides a secure grip when held, while the sturdy wooden shaft and metal tip offer functional balance and ground contact. The compact proportions allow it to stand neatly in a hallway umbrella stand or wall rack when not in use.

Popular during the 19th century, novelty walking sticks featured carved pommels or handles depicting animals, figures, or intricate motifs, functioning as both functional accessories and indicators of social status.

These canes were typically crafted from hardwoods such as chestnut, hazel, or mahogany, with handles intricately carved directly into the shaft or fitted separately using timber, bone, or horn.

Authentic period canes exhibit hand-carved detailing with subtle tool marks, natural age patina on the timber, and historically consistent metal ferrules at the base.

An antique cane can be displayed vertically in a vintage brass or ceramic umbrella stand near an entryway, or mounted horizontally on a hallway wall as part of a curated display.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and damp environments, dusting gently with a soft cloth and applying clear microcrystalline wax periodically to protect the surface.
