This nineteenth-century torchere stands 92 cm high with a width and depth of 42 cm, making it a compact option to place in an empty corner of a living room or hallway. The circular top holds an inset woolwork and needlework panel displaying red, yellow, and green floral motifs under a glazed protective surface, bordered by a gilded wooden edge with small brass ball hardware projections. The structure combines gilded wood and ebonized wood, showing visible surface wear and scuffs to the metallic finish across the round top and tripartite base. Beneath the tabletop, a well-turned column stem leads down to tripod feet finished with small ball terminals. The column and base display painted decoration in green and dark brown tones alongside the original gilding. This pedestal functions practically as a display surface for a small vase, lamp, or decorative object within a traditional interior space.

A torchere stand is a tall, slender piece of occasional furniture originally created in 17th-century France to elevate candelabras and oil lamps. Over the 18th and 19th centuries, these stands evolved into decorative interior furniture used to display botanical arrangements, sculptures, and decorative bowls.

19th-century torchere stands were typically crafted from hardwoods such as beech, mahogany, or oak, which were then carved, turned, and finished with gold leaf gilt or ebonised paint. Tops frequently incorporated decorative panels, including hand-stitched needlework, marble, or polychrome painted surfaces.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut joinery on the underside, natural surface wear or craquelure across gilded areas, and genuine age patina on the ebonised finish. Weight distribution in the tripod base and original needlework or inset top details also indicate historical authenticity.

A torchere stand functions effectively in unused architectural spaces such as room corners, window bays, or hallway alcoves. It can be styled with a potted plant, a ceramic vase, or an art object to add vertical interest and texture to the room.

Gently dust the wood and gilded surfaces using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners that could dissolve gold leaf or finish layers. Keep the piece in a stable environment away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and damp conditions.
