Description

Early 20th Century Neoclassical Style Plaster Pedestal on Iron Stand 89cm, C1900.

A superbly stylish plaster pedestal column circa 1900-1920, neoclassical form with custom made iron stand, measuring apx 89cm.

The striking ochre pedestal is 100% plaster, a thick and heavy cast set to a neoclassical design with ornate swag and drapery motifs, showing a timeworn earthy patination and fine evidence of wear and use which enhances its character and authenticity, whilst structurally excellent.

The lower section of the column has a rare basket weave, raffia applied decoration, we re unsure how original this is but will leave to the buyer to decide to keep or remove.

The iron stand is custom made, probs my hand forged and dates to the same period of early 20th century, circa 1920, tbc.

This early 20th century Neoclassical style pedestal is cast from plaster in an ochre and terracotta colourway, presented on a custom made iron stand. The cylindrical column exhibits classical mouldings, ornate drapery swags, textured basket weave hatching on the lower section, and a timeworn earthy patination with surface wear. The square iron base has small scrolled feet and visible rivet detailing around the perimeter. Standing 89 cm high, 30 cm wide and 32 cm deep, it provides a stable display platform for decorative objects. Suitable for positioning in an empty corner of a living room, hallway or study, the pedestal brings sculptural classical presence to interior spaces. The thick and heavy plaster construction ensures structural stability while accommodating busts, urns or vases. The combination of the warm earthy plaster column and the utilitarian iron support offers a contrasting material palette suitable for traditional and eclectic settings alike.

Neoclassical pedestals draw inspiration from classical antiquity, featuring motifs like fluting, swags, and Greco-Roman architectural column proportions. Popularised during the 18th to early 20th centuries, these pieces were designed to display sculptures, busts, and botanical arrangements in formal interiors.

Pedestals were crafted from carved marble, cast plaster, terracotta, timber, and stone, often set onto wrought iron or bronze metalwork bases for structural stability. Plaster pieces were typically hand-cast using moulds and finished with painted or patinated earth pigments.

Authentic early 20th-century plaster columns exhibit natural age wear, subtle patination, and hand-finished moulding details. The presence of period metalwork bases with hand-riveted joints or hand-wrought iron feet further indicates era-appropriate manufacture.

Pedestals serve as architectural accent pieces in corners, entryways, or alcoves to elevate decorative objects such as marble busts, bronze sculptures, or terracotta urns. They introduce vertical height and texture when contrasted against neutral or contemporary minimalist backdrops.

Clean plaster surfaces using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water or liquid chemical solvents that can dissolve plaster or damage original painted patinas. Keep any iron structural components dry and lightly apply microcrystalline wax to prevent oxidisation or rust formation.
