This classical revival garden statue dates from the 1920s and depicts a seated female nude bather in a draped cloth pose. Modelled from cast stone, the figure has a weathered grey surface covered in a natural lichen patina and detailed hair and facial features. The composition measures 63 cm high, 26 cm wide and 30 cm deep. Suitable for both interior and exterior display, this heavy decorative piece fits well in a sunlit conservatory or a fireplace alcove. The design shows classical proportions with precise digits and refined drapery folds over a rounded base. The muted grey stone works well alongside patterned textiles and natural timber furniture.

During the early 20th century, cast stone emerged as an accessible alternative to carved marble for garden ornament, allowing classical Greek and Roman motifssuch as female bathers and allegorical figuresto adorn private landscapes.

Cast stone statues were manufactured by pouring a dense mixture of aggregate stone, sand, crushed marble, and cement into sculpted moulds, resulting in a durable stone composite that mimicked hand-carved masonry.

Authentic period pieces exhibit organic surface wear, subtle moulding seams, fine surface pitting, and true lichen or moss accumulation that develops slowly over decades of outdoor exposure.

A weathered stone sculpture can be styled on a hearth, inside a fireplace alcove, or displayed on a plinth in a sunlit conservatory to introduce tactile historical contrast into contemporary spaces.

To preserve cast stone, clean surface debris using soft brushes and clean water without pressure washing, and elevate the piece off wet soil during freeze-thaw cycles to prevent structural cracking.
