Antique 20th Century Golden Oak Tea Table | Fold Over Top

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century fine quality tea table in golden oak, a wonderfully distinctive piece with a clever design that allows its proportions to be easily adapted when required.

Standing on turned legs joined by supporting stretchers, the table has a sturdy and beautifully balanced appearance.

A hinged leg swings out to support the raised leaf, extending the surface when additional table space is needed before neatly folding back into its more compact form.

One drawer provides useful space for smaller items and is finished with a decorative brass handle.

This unusual extending mechanism gives the table plenty of individuality while also making it particularly practical for everyday use or entertaining.

Gorgeous grain and colour are displayed throughout the golden oak, bringing warmth and highlighting the natural character of the timber.

In good condition, well made and of fine quality, this highly desirable tea table is an interesting and versatile piece with a design that sets it apart from more conventional examples.

This early 20th-century occasional table in the Jacobean Revival style works well in an English Country House setting, specifically designed for placement in an empty corner. Fashioned from golden oak with a warm brown colour, the piece measures 76 cm high, 98 cm wide, and 41 cm deep when closed, extending to an 82 cm depth. The design comprises a fold-over octagonal top, an arched frieze, and a single central drawer fitted with a round metal ring handle. The table stands on heavily turned baluster legs with bulbous lower sections, connected by a continuous lower stretcher base that mirrors the octagonal footprint. The natural grain of the timber is visible across the surfaces alongside minor surface marks and wear consistent with age and use. Inside a home today, the piece functions practically as a tea table or side surface in a living room, hallway, or study, providing a compact footprint that adapts through its hinged folding mechanism when extra surface area is required.

A fold-over tea table is a versatile piece of accent furniture designed with a hinged top that opens to double the surface area, originally intended for serving tea or playing cards.

Pieces from this era commonly feature solid oak construction, hand-turned legs, mortise and tenon joinery, and iron or brass hardware with a dark oxidised finish.

Authentic items display period-appropriate wear along the stretchers and edges, traditional drawer construction such as dovetail joints, and hand-finished turnings along the legs.

Place the table against a neutral wall as a console, or situate it in an empty corner paired with contemporary table lamps and modern artwork to create a balanced contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight and harsh chemical cleaners.
