This is a seventeenth-century Dutch antique map of Breconshire by Joan Blaeu, published in 1660, presented as a framed cartographic piece from the atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus. The copperplate engraving displays cream-coloured paper with hand-coloured coats of arms, a title cartouche, and figural detail, protected beneath clear glass in a later ebonised and gilt frame featuring gold leaf detailing and beaded moulding along the inner edge, showing a desirable aged patina. The piece measures 44.5 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. It is suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or above a sideboard in a home today.

17th-century Dutch cartography represents the golden age of mapmaking, defined by high technical precision, elaborate decorative cartouches, heraldic imagery, and hand-coloured embellishments printed from engraved copper plates.

Maps from this era were printed on hand-made rag paper using ink applied to engraved copper plates. Detailed examples were subsequently hand-coloured using watercolour pigments and mounted in wooden frames.

Authentic period map engravings display a distinct plate mark indentation around the image border created by the pressure of the printing press, alongside visible chain lines and watermarks inherent to hand-laid paper.

An antique map works well as a focal point above a console table, sideboard, or desk, pairing effectively with dark timber furniture, brass accents, and modern neutral wall tones to provide historical contrast.

To preserve antique paper items, display them away from direct sunlight and humid environments, and ensure framing incorporates UV-protective glass and acid-free mounting materials to prevent discolouration.
