This small Arts and Crafts wall cabinet dates from 1910 and exhibits an English Country House design style in dark brown oak, glass, and brass. The dark timber has a rich, warm tone with visible grain patterns on the flat surfaces and shaped supports. A single glazed door incorporates X-braced astragal glazing bars and bottle green bullseye glass cabochons in the four corners. Hardware includes a drop brass handle mounted on the left stile, while an open top shelf sits beneath a prominent moulded cornice. The construction incorporates shaped hanging brackets at the base and sides, maintaining practical compact proportions measuring 61.5 cm high, 44.5 cm wide, and 14 cm deep. Suitability in a modern home extends to narrow wall spaces in a hallway, kitchen, bathroom, or study where floor area is limited. The interior provides visible shelving behind the glazed door for storing small items, spices, or collectibles, while the top niche offers additional display capacity. The piece mounts directly to a wall, serving as both functional storage and period wall decoration in domestic settings.

Arts and Crafts wall cabinets emphasise honest construction, visible joinery, and the natural grain of timber, predominantly oak. Emerging in the late nineteenth century as a reaction against industrial mass production, pieces from this movement often feature simple rectilinear forms, geometric glazing patterns, and hand-finished metal hardware.

These cabinets were primarily crafted from native hardwoods such as quarter-sawn oak, walnut, or ash. Doors frequently incorporated clear or coloured glass panes held by lead cames or timber glazing bars, alongside fittings made from patinated brass, copper, or wrought iron.

Authentic period cabinets feature hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joints, natural wear around handles and hinges, and original dark patination on timber and metalwork. Look for hand-bevelled edges, unrefined backs with original saw marks, and period-correct glass with subtle variations or inclusions.

Position the cabinet on a neutral or dark painted wall to serve as a focal point in a hallway, bathroom, or kitchen nook. Use the glazed compartment to display small ceramics, glassware, or books, balancing traditional timber tones with modern minimalist surrounds.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a dry, soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the oak. Clean the glass carefully using a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a microfibre cloth to avoid liquid seeping into surrounding wood joint work.
