Edwardian writing tables, produced between 1901 and 1910, typically feature lighter, more delicate proportions than earlier Victorian designs. They frequently incorporate eighteenth-century revival styles such as Sheraton or Hepplewhite, characterised by slender tapered legs, geometric boxwood stringing, and functional stationery compartments.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid mahogany and rich mahogany veneers, often accented with boxwood or satinwood inlay. Hardware typically consisted of solid brass handles, escutcheons, and brass wheel castors fitted to the base of the tapered legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished dovetail joints inside the drawers, natural age-related oxidisation on the timber underside, and original brass fittings. Look for fine line boxwood stringing along the drawer fronts and leg faces, which was a prominent decorative technique of the era.

These compact tables function effectively as small home office desks, hallway console tables, or bedroom dressing tables. Pairing dark mahogany timber with neutral wall shades, modern desk lamps, or contemporary art creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the timber from warping or fading. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, working in the direction of the wood grain.
