Early 20th Century Decoy Duck - No5

1900 - 1920
Description

We have been fortunate to find a small collection of original Decoy ducks.

Characterful antique folk art decoy duck, shaped and painted by hand with the kind of honest surface and irregularity that only comes with age.

Originally made as a working decoy, it has developed a fabulous timeworn patina, with areas of wear and softened paint that give it real depth and individuality. Pieces like this were created as functional objects rather than decoration, which is precisely what makes them so appealing today.

We love these displayed individually as small sculptural objects, although they work particularly well gathered together as a collection on a console, drapers table or open shelf. Their simple form sits brilliantly alongside both antique and contemporary pieces.

A great little piece of folk art with plenty of personality, history and decorative presence.

This early twentieth-century folk art decoy duck is a hand-carved timber object designed with a muted brown painted finish. The piece displays a weathered wooden surface, softened painted plumage details, and an exposed iron attachment staple beneath the breast. Other visible characteristics include a carved eye socket and distinct signs of age through surface wear and a timeworn patina across the body. The decoy measures 17 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Originally functioning as a working decoy, the duck now serves as a decorative object suited for display in a home. It sits comfortably on a mantelpiece, a console, or an open shelf, operating as an individual sculptural accent. The simple form integrates into interior spaces alongside both antique and contemporary furnishings, adding traditional folk art character to living areas, studies, or hallways.

Decoy ducks were originally crafted by hunters and regional artisans as functional tools to attract wildfowl into range on open water. Over time, these hand-carved items evolved into a recognised form of folk art valued for their individual craftsmanship.

Decoys were typically carved from lightweight, resilient timbers such as cedar, pine, or basswood. They were finished with oil-based paints and frequently fitted with lead ballast weights or iron rigging loops to remain balanced in water.

Authentic working decoys display functional traits including neck-seam joints, iron attachment staples, lead weights, and surface wear consistent with water use. Tool marks from drawknives or rasps beneath weathered paint also indicate hand fabrication.

Positioning a carved timber decoy on a mantelpiece, open bookshelf, or console top introduces natural texture and historical form to a space. Placing folk art alongside structured modern ceramics or architectural volumes creates a balanced display.

Dust the object gently with a soft, dry brush to clean the surface without lifting paint flakes. Avoid liquid cleaning solutions, chemical solvents, or heavy waxes, and display the item away from direct sunlight and fluctuating atmospheric humidity.
