Antique Arts & Crafts Oak Occasional Table C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An Arts & Crafts oak occasional table, the flared pagoda-form top with a double-moulded edge set over a fall-front cabinet featuring an arched fielded panel and brass rosette pull, with an integrated pipe rack fitted to the side, all raised on slender square-tapered splayed legs united by a lower tier.

The impressed 'F. J. COLE' mark to the underside of the top is almost certainly a journeyman’s stamp, pointing towards individual bench assembly by a skilled cabinetmaker. Its slender profile and compact footprint allow the table to sit alongside an armchair as an architectural drink stand, where the integrated pipe rack adds period intrigue and the fall-front cupboard provides discreet storage.

Very good antique condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1900.

This Edwardian Arts and Crafts occasional table comes from circa 1900. Fashioned from solid oak in a warm brown timber colour, the piece has an overhanging flared pagoda-form top with a double-moulded edge, a central fall-front cupboard door with an arched fielded panel, a small round metal rosette handle, an integrated side pipe rack, and a lower tier shelf supported by slender square-tapered splayed legs. Minor surface wear consistent with age is visible on the wood. The table measures 76 cm high, 37.5 cm wide, and 37.5 cm deep. Position this compact piece in a living room at the end of a sofa or alongside an armchair where the lower shelf and fall-front cabinet provide practical surface and storage space.

Emerging in the late 19th century, the Arts and Crafts movement emphasised handcrafted honesty, simple geometric forms, visible joinery, and a rejection of mass industrial production.

Craftsmen primarily utilised solid native hardwoods such as quarter-sawn oak, incorporating traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, framed panel doors, and subtle hand-carved detailing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age-appropriate timber patination, original metal hardware, hand-fitted cabinet joints, and distinctive structural proportions typical of turn-of-the-century design.

Position the piece beside an armchair as an accent table, or place it in a reading nook topped with a ceramic vessel or desk light to contrast contemporary lines with warm timber tones.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or warping.
