This early 20th century Victorian style walking stick and cane is a gentleman's library accessory crafted from warm brown Malacca cane, steel, and silver. The piece incorporates a silver knop with an armorial design depicting a griffon and flag alongside the motto "Semper Paratus", a hallmarked silver pommel band, a triangular section etched and decorated fullered Wilkinson blade, and a horn ferrule at the base of the wooden sheath. Visible details include minor dents on the silver pommel, surface discolouration along the timber shaft, and detailed etching down the length of the exposed steel blade. The entire item measures 95 cm high by 4 cm wide and 4 cm deep. In a modern home setting, this sword stick sits naturally displayed upon a bookshelf among other curiosities, or stored upright in an entryway corner stand. The concealed blade remains safely housed within its wooden sheath, allowing the cane to function as a decorative antique object or a conversation piece within a study, library, or hallway.

Concealed within traditional walking canes, sword sticks gained prominence during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as fashion items that provided discreet self-defence for gentlemen.

Sword sticks commonly feature shafts carved from lightweight yet durable woods or canes such as malacca, topped with silver or brass pommels and housing steel blades.

Authentic examples display precise metalwork, period hallmarks on silver fittings, maker marks stamped into the steel blade, and natural wear to the wooden sheath.

Sword sticks are frequently displayed horizontally across mantelpieces, integrated within bookshelf arrangements, or set in antique cane stands within entryways.

Store in a humidity-controlled environment, apply microcrystalline wax to wooden and silver components, and maintain a light layer of acid-free oil on the steel blade to prevent oxidisation.
