Antique Edwardian Oak Coffee Table | Two Drawers

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 20th century good quality coffee table in oak, a substantial and characterful piece that offers far more than a simple occasional table.

Four sturdy turned legs form the base, joined by supporting stretchers that give the design a strong traditional presence.

Set discreetly into the front are two useful drawers, providing convenient storage for smaller everyday items while blending naturally into the overall form.

The generously sized top provides an excellent amount of surface space and really allows the beauty of the oak to be appreciated.

Gorgeous grain and colour spread across the timber, creating wonderful patterns and variations that make each area of the table visually interesting.

Its generous proportions, solid construction and practical storage make this an especially useful piece for a living space.

In good condition, this desirable coffee table is well made and of good quality, offering a reassuringly substantial feel and plenty of authentic oak character.

An Edwardian coffee table in the English Country House style, constructed from solid dark brown oak with a rich timber grain. The rectangular top rests above two front drawers fitted with small round wooden knob handles and a scalloped lower apron. Below, four sturdy turned baluster legs connect via a low rectangular stretcher base, giving the piece a traditional profile. Measuring 50 cm high, 114 cm wide and 48.5 cm deep, this substantial surface provides practical storage within its two compartments for everyday household items. It sits comfortably in a central living room setting as a functional coffee table, offering a useful tabletop alongside its lower storage capacity.

FAQs

Twentieth-century oak coffee tables often draw design inspiration from earlier historic eras, such as Tudor, Jacobean, or Georgian periods. They typically combine sturdy solid wood construction with functional low-profile surface space adapted for modern living room layouts.

Traditional oak tables frequently feature mortise and tenon joints, turned baluster legs, and wooden drawer pegs. Solid oak framing and dovetailed drawer construction ensure structural integrity and durability over decades of use.

Authentic period pieces display natural age-related wear, hand-finished patination, and legitimate construction markers like dovetailed drawers or period-correct timber grain. Inspecting the undersides and drawer interiors usually reveals genuine age marks rather than artificial distressing.

A dark oak coffee table can be balanced in modern spaces by pairing it with neutral upholstery, linen fabrics, and lighter floor rugs. Stacking contemporary art books and adding ceramic or glass decorative accents creates an appealing contrast between traditional wood grain and modern textures.

Keep oak furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber movement or cracking. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain to nourish the timber and protect the original surface patination.
