This Edwardian oak coffee table follows a refectory style with a rustic farmhouse aesthetic. Made from solid oak in a dark brown finish, the table reveals a visible timber grain alongside natural variations in tone and colour throughout the wood. The design incorporates shaped end supports fitted with pierced teardrop cut-outs, a keyed horizontal stretcher running centrally between the uprights, and sledge feet at the base. Measuring 45.5 cm high, 91.5 cm wide, and 46.5 cm deep, this versatile piece provides a practical low surface suitable for a living room or seating area. The sturdy construction and classic proportions make it well-suited for everyday use as a functional coffee table within both traditional and contemporary interior spaces.

FAQs

An oak trestle coffee table typically features a rectangular top supported by two upright end standards joined by a central longitudinal stretcher. Popularised during the Arts and Crafts movement, this design draws inspiration from medieval trestle tables, combining structural stability with functional simplicity.

Tables from this period were predominantly crafted using solid oak, often incorporating traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, pegged stretchers, and solid end supports. The timber was typically finished with wax or varnish to enhance the natural grain.

Authentic pieces usually display natural signs of age, including subtle wear to the finish, patination along edges, and authentic construction details like wedged or pegged stretchers. Inspecting the underside reveals hand-worked or early machine-saw marks consistent with period manufacturing.

A solid oak trestle coffee table acts as a grounding focal point in a seating area. Pair it with neutral-toned soft furnishings, contemporary ceramics, and layered textiles to balance its robust wood structure and dark tones.

Keep solid oak furniture away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or cracking. Regular dusting with a dry microfiber cloth and periodic application of high-quality beeswax will protect the surface finish and maintain the timber sheen.
