Antique Asian Carved Hardstone Head Fragment with Gilding C.1900

An unusual antique carved hardstone sculptural head fragment, probably South or Southeast Asian and dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

The face is carved with elongated almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose and gently smiling expression, with stylised hair or headdress falling to either side. Traces of original gilt decoration remain across the face, particularly around the brows, eyes and cheeks.

The pale translucent stone has a naturally crystalline appearance and is notably substantial for its compact size. The exact mineral has not been scientifically tested and is therefore conservatively described as hardstone.

This is a fragment from a formerly larger carved figure, with the rear and lower section broken away. The exposed reverse clearly shows the crystalline structure of the stone and the extent of the historic loss.
