This Art Deco novelty walking stick dates from 1929 and follows a gentleman's library design aesthetic. The piece consists of a dark brown hardwood shaft, a carved horn parrot head handle, a silver collar band, and a horned ferrule at the tip. The dark brown timber shows a smooth polished finish along the shaft, contrasted by the detailed texture of the carved animal head and the polished metallic band. The cane measures 96 cm high by 10 cm wide by 3 cm deep. Collectors can display this walking stick in a hallway beside the front door or in a study as a decorative accessory. The composition suits a traditional interior, bringing period character to an entryway display stand or a corner umbrella holder. The tactile details provide visual interest for visitors while maintaining the functional form of a historical walking aid.

During the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, walking canes evolved from purely utilitarian support tools into fashion statements. Novelty handles featuring animal figures, carved birds, and stylized motifs became popular accessories for social occasions and evening attire.

Historic walking canes were constructed using dense hardwoods such as ebony, malacca, or rosewood for the shaft. Handles were frequently sculpted from horn, bone, silver, or resin, often secured to the shaft with silver or brass collars.

Authentic period canes often feature hallmarks on metal collars indicating the year and manufacturer. Look for signs of natural age on the wood shaft, original horn or silver fittings, and construction techniques consistent with early 20th-century craftsmanship.

Collectable walking sticks can be displayed in an antique umbrella stand near an entryway, mounted horizontally on a narrow wall space using specialized brackets, or arranged in a decorative stand within a library context.

Dust the stick regularly with a soft cloth and apply a neutral microcrystalline wax to the wooden shaft to preserve the finish. Avoid polish on silver mounts, using a dedicated silver cloth instead to prevent chemical transfer onto wood or horn elements.
