Antique Mahogany Pair of Serpentine Serving Console Tables with Neoclassical Carving

1900 - 1920
Description

A very elegant pair of antique mahogany serving console tables of exceptional quality featuring unusual serpentine shaped tops and finely carved neoclassical decoration throughout.

The tables stand on beautifully fluted tapering legs with carved rosettes to the corners and attractive fluted friezes. The central neoclassical carvings with draped swags add a refined decorative touch and give the tables a very sophisticated appearance. The rich mahogany has a lovely warm colour with attractive figuring across the tops.

These versatile tables can be used separately as console or serving tables or placed together to form one impressive larger table making them ideal for dining rooms, entrance halls or entertaining spaces. Pieces such as these were originally designed for grand homes where they would have been used for serving food and displaying silver, porcelain and decorative objects during formal occasions.

A refined and highly decorative pair with elegant proportions and superb craftsmanship.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical console tables feature classical architectural proportions inspired by ancient Greek and Roman design. Key characteristics include serpentine or rectilinear fronts, fluted tapered legs, draped urn carvings, and decorative rosettes.

High-grade mahogany was selected for its dense grain and deep reddish-brown colour. Construction typically features hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, reeded or fluted aprons, and carved detail blocks.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-planed secondary timbers on the underside, hand-carved frieze details, natural grain shrinkage, and genuine patination in areas of frequent contact.

A pair of console tables creates symmetry when framing a doorway, fireplace, or entrance hall. Top them with table lamps or modern artwork to balance classical proportions with contemporary design.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax polish once or twice a year along the direction of the grain. Keep timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent shrinkage and surface damage.
