Description

Early 19th Century Grand Tour Carved Ivory Classical Portrait Plaque

Brief Description:

This is a rare and superb-quality early 19th-century Grand Tour carved ivory portrait plaque, depicting a Classical male figure in profile.

Ivory Submission number: W63JEHX7

The finely carved ivory bust depicts a distinguished male subject facing dexter, wearing a laurel wreath in the Classical Roman manner, and is particularly well executed for its diminutive scale.

The ivory portrait is mounted against a contrasting black oval surround, which beautifully emphasises the crisp detail and warm colouring of the carving.

The piece remains housed within its substantial original ebonised wooden glazed frame, retaining considerable age and character and giving the miniature an unusually strong architectural presence.

Dating to the early 19th century, circa 1820–1840, this is a particularly appealing example of the Classical taste associated with the European Grand Tour, when works inspired by the art and antiquities of ancient Greece and Rome were avidly collected.

The frame itself is an important part of the overall presentation, with its deep moulded profile, original-looking backing and naturally aged ebonised finish.

A wonderfully decorative and highly collectable Grand Tour piece of excellent quality.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour portrait plaques were miniature relief works of art, often depicting historical figures, classical profile busts, or classical mythology, acquired by European travellers during the 18th and 19th centuries as educational souvenirs.

These plaques were typically created from carved ivory, carved stone, plaster, or composition relief, then mounted onto dark fabric backing within heavy wooden or ebonised frames.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of detailed hand-carving or moulding, age-appropriate surface patination, traditional ebonised or gilded timber frames, and historical mounting backing inside the frame.

Integrate the framed plaque into a vignette on a bookshelf, arrange it as part of a wall gallery, or display it alongside brass accoutrements and antique books in a study.

Keep the object in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and moisture. Dust the exterior frame and glass gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners near the timber frame.
