Rare Victorian Scumble Original Painted Side Table C1860

19th century
Description

A rare and highly decorative Victorian side table dating to circa 1860, retaining its wonderful original scumble-painted finish, skilfully executed to imitate the grain and appearance of oak.

The table is particularly unusual for retaining its original painted faux-marble top, which complements the warm scumbled decoration beautifully and gives the piece considerable decorative appeal.

Fitted with a single frieze drawer, traditionally constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, and raised on four elegant, well-turned legs.

The great appeal of this table lies in the survival of its original decorative painted surfaces. The combination of faux oak graining and painted marble makes it an increasingly difficult type of untouched Victorian furniture to find.

A charming and practical piece of 19th-century vernacular painted furniture, equally suited as a side table, occasional table or lamp table.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scumble painting is a decorative glazing technique popular in the 19th century where semi-opaque paint or varnish was applied over a lighter base coat to imitate expensive wood grains, such as walnut or rosewood, on humbler softwoods like pine.

Victorian side tables were predominantly constructed from woods such as pine, oak, or mahogany, often joined with hand-cut dovetails and finished with oil glazes, shellac, or scumble paint effects.

Authentic period finishes exhibit organic wear patterns, craquelure within the glaze layer, hand-turned drawer knobs, and evidence of period joinery such as uneven dovetail joints.

Position the piece in an entryway or beside seating to provide textural contrast against minimalist modern backdrops and contemporary lighting.

Clean the surface gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid water or abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical glazes, and maintain stable indoor humidity levels.
