This nineteenth-century Regency coffee table comprises a large octagonal toleware tray mounted upon an ebonised wooden stand. The tray surface features a hand-painted classical figural scene depicting The Family of Darius before Alexander, rendered in rich reds, golds and dark tones within an elaborate gilt floral border and a raised pierced gallery with twin carrying handles. The supporting wooden base stands on four straight square legs. Measuring 46 cm high, 89 cm wide and 63 cm deep, this table suits placement at the end of a sofa in a living room or library. The metal tray and dark wooden stand combine durability with a distinct decorative motif, offering a practical surface for everyday use while displaying traditional period craftsmanship.

Toleware refers to decorative objects crafted from japanned or lacquered tinplate, which gained widespread popularity across Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A toleware tray table features a painted metal serving tray, often decorated with classical or botanical artwork, mounted on a wooden or metal base.

The tray tops were fashioned from rolled sheet iron or tinplate, which was painted, lacquered, and decorated by hand with gilt highlights and polychrome pigments. Supporting bases were typically constructed from painted or stained hardwoods, often tailored to fit the specific contours of the tray.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display genuine age-related craquelure throughout the painted lacquer surface and natural oxidisation on exposed metal areas. Hand-painted artwork from this era shows brushwork depth rather than modern mechanical transfer lines, accompanied by pierced gallery handles and gilded perimeter borders.

A painted tole tray table functions as a focal low coffee table or an occasional accent table in contemporary living areas. Its dark, structured frame and rich figurative artwork contrast effectively against minimalist upholstery, textured natural fibre rugs, and clean architectural lines.

Dust the painted surface gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to avoid scratching the historical lacquer. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and moisture, and refrain from using abrasive liquid polishes or chemical cleaners that could strip the delicate paint and gilded detailing.
