Antique French Porcelain & Brass Mounted Pair of Jardinière Urns

19th century
Description

A magnificent pair of large antique French porcelain jardinière urns dating to circa 1880, lavishly decorated with hand-painted panels and elaborate brass mounts. Their impressive scale, unusual decoration and highly architectural form make them exceptional examples of late 19th-century French decorative art.

Each substantial jardinière has a wide flared body with a dramatic black ground, richly hand painted with colourful flowers, scrolling foliage and decorative motifs. Large pastoral panels depicting dogs within landscape settings form the focal point of each piece, surrounded by intricate polychrome floral decoration.

The interiors are equally attractive, with a contrasting pale ground decorated with delicate hand-painted flowers and foliage beneath the rim, demonstrating the attention to detail throughout.

The porcelain bodies are extensively mounted with ornate brass, including substantial decorative rims, elaborate scrolling foliate side handles and further applied mounts. Each jardinière is raised upon a shaped pedestal decorated with hand-painted flowers and a distinctive mauve Greek-key border, terminating in a square porcelain plinth supported by magnificent scrolling brass feet.

Originally designed as grand jardinières for displaying plants, their sculptural form also allows them to be used purely as decorative urns. At 75 cm high, they have considerable presence and would make spectacular statement pieces positioned either side of a doorway, fireplace or console, or within a large entrance hall, drawing room, orangery or conservatory.

A rare and exceptionally decorative pair, combining richly painted porcelain with the opulence of late Victorian-period French brass-mounted furnishings.

Condition Report

Wonderful original antique condition with age-related wear and patination consistent with their age and use. The porcelain retains its rich colour and extensive hand-painted decoration, complemented beautifully by the aged brass mounts. Please refer to the photographs for full details.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French porcelain jardiniere urn is a decorative vessel produced during the nineteenth century, designed to house potted plants or function as an ornamental table centrepiece featuring hand-painted porcelain and cast metal mounts.

These decorative pieces typically consist of a hard-paste or soft-paste porcelain body decorated with enamel finishes, fitted with cast brass or bronze metalwork including gadrooned rims, side handles, and moulded plinths.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-painted reserves, minor signs of age on metal fittings, historic joinery on internal mountings, and traditional floral or pictorial enamel techniques.

A pair of porcelain urns can be arranged symmetrically on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish structural balance and introduce traditional pattern into modern room schemes.

Dust the porcelain surface using a dry, soft cloth, avoiding water on unglazed areas. Metal mounts should be wiped gently without abrasive cleaners to prevent stripping the natural patina or damaging painted porcelain.
