This antique side table originates from circa 1900 in an Arts and Crafts style, rendered in solid quarter-sawn oak with a warm brown timber colour and visible grain patterns. The construction includes a square top set over four splayed bobbin-turned legs, a lower rectangular shaped under-tier shelf, and terminal brass claws holding glass ball feet. Wear and marks appear throughout the wood surfaces in a manner consistent with age, while the solid and sturdy frame maintains its structural integrity. Measuring 71 cm high, 60 cm wide and 60 cm deep, the piece functions practically as a support surface positioned at the end of a sofa in an English country house interior setting.

FAQs

Emerging in the late nineteenth century, the Arts and Crafts movement emphasised handcrafted construction, visible joinery, and the natural grain of native woods like oak over industrial mass production.

These tables were typically crafted from solid timbers such as quarter-sawn oak, featuring turned spindle legs, mortise and tenon joinery, and functional under-shelves.

Authentic pieces display signs of genuine hand-finishing, natural wood patination, traditional underside joinery techniques, and period-appropriate wear on lower surfaces and feet.

Position the side table beside modern upholstered seating or in a quiet reading corner, balancing the warm timber with contemporary ceramics, simple lighting, or framed artwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically, while avoiding placement near direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
