Description

A late 19th century bamboo occasional table of square form, the decorative original painted japanned top, raised on gently splayed legs united by a lower tier and reinforced with decorative side braces.

The bamboo surfaces display an exceptional vibrancy of colour and the contrast with the attractive, well-worn painted japanned top creates a striking visual effect typical of Aesthetic Movement bamboo furniture of the period.

Very good antique condition with some surface wear consistent with age and use. The lower tier is a later replacement. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1890.

This Victorian occasional table dates from circa 1890 in the Aesthetic Movement style, manufactured in England. The piece comprises a square form constructed from mottled tortoiseshell bamboo and dark brown wood, complete with a dark lacquered top and a lower tier shelf. The structure rests on gently splayed legs united by the lower tier and reinforced with decorative side braces, while the surfaces exhibit visible surface wear consistent with age and use alongside a later replacement lower tier. Measuring 71 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, the table fits into practical spaces around the home. In a modern interior, this occasional table suits placement at the end of a sofa or inside a sunlit conservatory to hold small decorative items, lamps, or everyday objects. The compact footprint allows the table to sit comfortably in a sitting room, study, or hallway while retaining the character of late 19th-century furniture. The design integrates easily into existing period or eclectic schemes through its contrasting dark japanned surface and natural bamboo framing.

Victorian bamboo furniture gained widespread popularity during the late 19th century Aesthetic Movement, heavily influenced by East Asian design principles and trade. Cabinetmakers constructed these pieces using natural or scorched bamboo frames paired with lacquered, painted, or textured inserts.

These tables typically feature hollow bamboo canes, often heat-treated or scorched to produce a mottled tortoiseshell appearance. The tops and shelves incorporate wood panels finished with lacquer, woven matting, patterned paper, or embossed leatherette.

Authentic period pieces display joinery made with wooden dowels, pin nails, or woven cane wrapping rather than modern mechanical fasteners. Natural surface wear, uneven cane node spacing, and original patina on the underside of framing indicate 19th-century origin.

A Victorian bamboo table serves as an accent piece next to contemporary upholstered furniture or inside a reading nook. Its tiered structure provides surface area for books, table lamps, or botanical displays.

Keep bamboo furniture positioned away from central heating radiators and direct sunlight to prevent drying or cracking. Wipe surfaces using a soft, dry cloth and apply a light coating of beeswax paste to maintain the timber finish.
