Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Regency style occasional table, made around 1920, functions as a compact side table for living spaces. The piece consists of a black lacquered papier-mache oval tray top, richly ornamented with gilded arabesque scrollwork and raised within a moulded edge. The top rests upon a gilt-brass base featuring four slender faux bamboo legs that curve outward at the base. These supports are joined centrally by an X-shaped cross stretcher, providing stability to the small-scale frame. The table measures 41 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this occasional table fits neatly at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair, offering a convenient surface for holding a small lamp, drinks, or decorative items. The combination of black and gold tones brings a refined Regency style to an interior, pairing easily with traditional or eclectic decor. Its modest dimensions allow it to sit comfortably in smaller reception rooms, reading nooks, or bedrooms as a functional accent piece.

FAQs

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Regency papier-mache furniture features pressed paper pulp coated in black japan varnish and decorated with gilded, lacquered, or painted ornamentation.

These tables combine glued layers of paper pulp molded under pressure, finished with dark varnish and gilding, often mounted upon wooden or brass faux-bamboo legs.

Authentic pieces display hand-applied gilded scrollwork, fine craquelure within the varnish, and heavy dense paper construction often stamped by historical makers.

A papier-mache table functions as an accent piece beside soft seating, providing historical texture and metallic highlights against neutral contemporary fabrics.

Dust surfaces gently using a dry microfibre cloth and prevent contact with moisture or chemical solvents, which can dissolve the varnish layer and damage the pulp structure.
