Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1870 English country butler tray and stand combines a medium dark brown oak tray with a matching folding X-frame base. The upper tray has raised gallery edges with integrated cut-out handles, and the wooden structure includes well-turned legs joined by multiple decorative stretchers. Measuring 73 cm high, 63.5 cm wide, and 54 cm deep, the piece sits firmly on the floor with tapered feet at the base of the crossing supports. At home today, this versatile tray table serves well beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa to hold drinks, books, or decorative items. The folding stand allows for easy storage or relocation between rooms while maintaining a sturdy surface for daily use in a living room or study.

FAQs

Originating in 18th-century England, a butlers tray resting on a folding stand was designed to transport tea, meals, or drinks from service quarters to formal reception rooms, providing a portable serving surface for hosts and domestic staff.

Traditional examples are typically constructed from solid European oak, featuring dovetail joints on the removable tray corners, gallery sides with hand-cut handles, and turned wood spindles on an X-frame folding base.

Authentic pieces display signs of functional age, hand-cut dovetail joinery along the tray walls, original webbing or brass hinges connecting the folding stand, and crisp wood turning on the legs and stretchers.

In contemporary interiors, these versatile tables function effectively as compact home bar stands, quiet reading-nook side tables beside an armchair, or flexible serving surfaces for entertaining.

Preserve the timber by applying a clear beeswax polish twice annually, clearing liquid spills immediately to avoid moisture marks, and placing the stand away from direct radiators or heat sources to prevent wood movement.
