Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A term or caryatid is a vertical architectural element that merges a human or mythological figure into a pedestal or pilaster. During the 17th century, skilled woodcarvers integrated these figures into decorative wall panelling, chimney pieces, and large furniture, drawing inspiration from Renaissance design motifs.

These elements were typically hand-chiselled from dense, slow-grown European oak. Craftsmen shaped the wood using gouges and mallets, securing the components to larger structures using wooden dowels or mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic period carvings display hand-tool marks, natural asymmetry, and dark patination in recessed areas. Evidence of historic shrinkage, hand-cut peg holes, and deep oxidisation around fixed points are key indicators of age.

Architectural elements can be displayed as sculptural art pieces on a bookshelf, mounted directly on a focal wall, or placed on a mantelpiece to introduce texture and historic character to modern or eclectic room schemes.

Dust the carving gently using a soft-bristled brush to clean deep crevices. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly once a year to preserve the wood moisture, and keep the object away from central heating sources and direct sunlight.
