Set of Twelve Highly Decorative 18thc Naively Painted Pine Panels Depicting St Michael

18th century
Description

A set of twelve highly decorative late 18th century (circa 1780) naively painted pine panels depicting St Michael the Archangel slaying the dragon or possibly St George, probably originally from a screen.

Each of the panels depicting St Michael slaying the dragon, each having a red and blue painted design framing the main image with four of the panels depicting an armorial behind the figure of St Michael.

The panels have been framed with a rounded dull blue moulded edge to match the parting bead and also to tone with the colours of the panels and to enable them to be easily hung onto a wall.

The panels are quite difficult to date as this type of construction spanned over many years from 1750-1820. Although the panels seem to be of English construction, the style of painting appears to be more that of Asian or Russian due to how the faces of the figures are depicted.

This set of panels are in good condition for age with some evidence of wear which can be viewed on the images, they are of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Naive folk art refers to visual works created by individuals without formal academic training, characterised by flattened perspectives, simplified geometric forms, and strong regional iconography.

Craftsmen typically utilised native softwoods like pine, applying natural earth pigments, mineral paints, or tempera directly over a prepared timber surface or thin gesso ground.

Authentic period pieces exhibit organic age characteristics including wood shrinkage, hand-tooling on board reverses, historical worm flight holes, and natural craquelure in the paint layer.

Designers frequently mount a series of decorative panels together on a neutral backdrop to create architectural interest, contrasting folk motifs with minimalist contemporary furnishings.

Panels should be displayed away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity, cleaned only with a dry soft-bristled brush to prevent pigment loss.
