Exemplary Early Tripod Table

17th century
Description

A magnificent and early tripod table in beautifully burnished oak. Single piece oval top which is unusually thick chamfered at the edge to imply lightness, bird cage action allowing the top to rotate. Large superbly turned baluster stem with well drawn swept legs. Having run out of superlatives it only remains for me to say that this remarkable table is as good as I have seen, proportion, colour, condition and patina are outstanding.

English. circa 1670

Height 68.5 cm ( 27”)

Width 77 cm ( 30 1/4”)

Depth 67 cm (26 1/4’)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A tripod table is a three-legged occasional table popularised during the eighteenth century, featuring a turned central column and a circular or shaped top designed to support tea service or lighting.

Early tripod tables were constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany using hand-cut dovetail cleats and mortise-and-tenon joints, often incorporating a block or birdcage mechanism allowing the top to tilt.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-turned central shafts, hand-sawn undersides, original wrought iron or wooden catches, and slight oval warping on the circular top due to natural timber shrinkage over time.

Position the table alongside a contemporary sofa or accent armchair as an occasional drink stand to introduce historical timber tones alongside modern soft furnishings.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct radiators and moist environments, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax polish along the grain annually.
