This 17th-century Charles II side table from England, dating between 1660 and 1680, uses solid oak with a dark brown finish and brass hardware. The thick top displays a large thumbnail moulding running around the edge, and the piece contains a single frieze drawer fitted with brass drop handles and an ornate decorative escutcheon. Below, impressive egg and disc turned ball legs are united by perimeter stretchers and retain their original feet. The timber exhibits a very good natural colour and patination with visible signs of age. Measuring 69.9 cm high, 83.8 cm wide, and 61 cm deep, this side table fits well beside the front door in an English country house interior, offering a surface for everyday items while serving as a functional storage piece in a hallway or entryway.

Charles II furniture, dating from around 1660 to 1685 during the English Restoration, is characterised by sturdy oak construction, bold turned legs, and stretchered bases designed to withstand damp stone floors.

Tables from this era were primarily crafted from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. Features typically included hand-planed timber tops, side-hung drawer construction, and brass drop handles.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-tooling such as adze marks, uneven wear along lower stretchers where feet rested, historical peg joinery, and natural shrinkage or patination across solid timber surfaces.

A period oak table serves as a functional statement piece in an entryway, living space, or hallway, functioning effectively against neutral plaster walls to highlight the deep timber tone and sculptural turned legs.

Keep timber away from direct heat sources and severe humidity changes to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically to maintain the surface patination.
