Exemplary Charles II Oak Side Table C.1670

17th century
Description

A rarely found entirely original Charles II oak side table with single drop flap, original timbers throughout, even original forged iron hinges. These single flap tables were designed to act as serving tables and were positioned on a wall close to the main table. The drop flap when extended allowed for a considerable serving space and, with the flap lowered, the table would take up very little room when not in use. It has never had two flaps, it was designed to have one and very few examples as good as this have survived.

The colour is exemplary and the patination - which is entirely natural - has a sheen like glass.

The well turned legs united by original stretchers and are peg jointed. The bed has a few light lines in the timber which are original and caused by the wind or water saw having a broken tooth when trimming this board,

The gate leg sweeps out smoothly to support the drop leaf. The leaf itself has developed a slight smile over the centuries but is entirely usable.

An extremely attractive and original 17th Century English oak table.

Dimensions are:

29 inches high, 36 inches wide, 26 inches deep when fully open, 13 inches deep when leaf is down.

This Charles II period side table dates from around 1670 and belongs to the English Country House style. Constructed from solid oak, the piece exhibits a dark brown colour and a natural patinated finish with a high sheen. The design incorporates a single drop leaf supported by a smooth gate leg mechanism, original forged iron hinges, pegged joinery, and a low box stretcher uniting well-turned legs. Visible details include light saw-marks on the timber bed from the original sawing process and a slight curvature to the leaf developed over centuries of use. The table measures 74 cm high, 91 cm wide, 66 cm deep when fully open, and 33 cm deep with the leaf down. In a modern home, this practical piece functions effectively as a serving table or console placed against a wall in a dining room, hallway, or empty corner.

Charles II furniture, originating from the English Restoration period between 1660 and 1685, marks a transition from simple Jacobean forms to more decorative designs. Key features include turned legs, rich oak timber, and practical drop-leaf construction for versatile space management.

Seventeenth-century English side tables were predominantly constructed from solid native oak using pegged mortise and tenon joinery. Surface finishes were achieved through linseed oil and natural beeswax, which developed a deep patination over centuries.

Authentic Charles II oak tables feature hand-planed timber surfaces, hand-carved wooden pegs, and period-accurate turned supports. Signs of age include uneven timber shrinkage across the grain and historical wear patterns along the foot stretchers.

A 17th-century oak side table creates textural contrast when positioned against modern neutral walls or minimalist architecture. Pair the dark patinated oak with contemporary ceramics or simple metal table lamps to highlight the historical turning details.

Maintain antique oak by applying a thin coat of clear beeswax polish annually, buffing gently with a clean microfibre cloth. Position the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, or moist environments to protect the solid timber joints from movement.
