Antique Edwardian Gilt Metal Mirrored Grape Vine Drinks Serving Tray

1900 - 1920
Description

A highly decorative antique Edwardian gilt metal and mirrored drinks serving tray dating to circa 1900.

This unusual tray features an oval mirrored plate surrounded by elaborate openwork gilt metal decoration depicting trailing vines, finely detailed vine leaves, bunches of grapes and scrolling tendrils. The naturalistic flowing design has a subtle Art Nouveau influence, typical of decorative pieces produced around the turn of the 20th century.

The grape and vine decoration has long been associated with wine, abundance and hospitality and is particularly appropriate for a tray of this type. It would originally have been used for serving or displaying decanters, wine glasses and liqueurs, most likely positioned on a sideboard, buffet or drinks table. The mirrored surface would have reflected glassware and candlelight, adding considerably to the presentation.

At 63 cm wide, this is a substantial and particularly decorative example, equally suited today for use as a drinks tray or as a striking decorative centrepiece on a console, sideboard or cocktail table.

Condition Report:

In good antique condition with age-related wear and patination to the gilt metal, together with some foxing and age-related marks to the original mirrored plate, all consistent with its age and use.

An Edwardian mirrored plateau tray is a decorative serving piece from the early 20th century featuring a central mirror glass panel enclosed within an ornamental metal frame, originally created to display glassware, decanters, or table centrepieces.

These trays were typically constructed using cast brass, spelter, or bronze that was subsequently gilded, electroplated, or finished with gold lacquers, housing a flat mirrored glass plate at the base.

Authenticity is indicated by natural age-related patina or oxidation on the metal frame, small dark spots known as foxing on the silvered mirror back, and original hand-assembled screw or tab fixings on the reverse.

Place the tray on a sideboard, coffee table, or bar cart to group decanters and glass tumblers, or position it on a dressing table to arrange perfume bottles and trinkets.

Dust the frame with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and clean the mirror glass using a slightly dampened cloth, ensuring liquid does not seep into the metal rim or loosen the gilding.
