Meissen was the first European manufacturer to produce hard-paste porcelain in the early 18th century. Naturalistic bird and animal models became prominent subjects, designed by master sculptors to showcase technical skill in hand-modelling and colourful polychrome enamelling.

These sculptures were crafted using hard-paste porcelain, formed from kaolin and petuntse. Delicate components like leaves, fruit, and feathers were hand-modelled or cast in moulds before undergoing a high-temperature firing, followed by detailed hand-application of enamel glazes and secondary firings.

Authentic pieces generally display the underglaze blue crossed swords trademark on the underside. Additionally, examine the quality of the hand painting, precise anatomical details, incised model numbers, and pressed worker marks typical of 19th-century manufacture.
