Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency Revival dining furniture produced around 1900 draws design inspiration from early 19th-century English models. These pieces typically feature dark timber construction, turned central pedestals, reeded tripod or quad leg arrangements, and brass toe caps with castors.

These large tables were traditionally crafted from solid mahogany and rich mahogany veneers over hardwood frames. The sections connect using brass table forks or clips, while the turned pillars rest on curved legs fitted with brass castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit construction details consistent with late Victorian and Edwardian cabinetmaking, such as hand-finished underside timber, cast brass hardware with age-appropriate oxidisation, and solid brass table clips.

A substantial mahogany table can be modernised by pairing it with streamlined upholstered dining chairs or modern mid-century designs. Positioned in an open-plan room beneath contemporary lighting, the timber grain provides warmth against neutral wall palettes.

Preserve the polished surface by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax paste along the wood grain annually. Protect the surface from liquid spills, direct sunlight, and heat sources to prevent warping or finish degradation.
