Early 19th Century Coalport John Rose Period Cabinet Trio, Circa 1811-20

19th century
Description

A fine and rare English porcelain set comprising a saucer, teacup, and coffee cup, dating to circa 1811–1820, pattern number 2/132 from the John Rose period.

Each piece is richly decorated with a deep dark royal blue ground, and three beautifully hand painted panels depicting delicately detailed white roses with stems and foliage, framed by finely executed foliate gilding. The cups are particularly impressive for their internal decoration, a considerably more difficult and skilful technique than traditional external decoration.

The set is a fine example of early 19th century English porcelain craftsmanship, combining intricate floral painting, richly applied gilding, and a striking cobalt blue ground.

All three pieces are in good condition, with no restoration.

Measurements:

Saucer: Height 3 cm; Width 15 cm; Depth 15 cm

Teacup: Height 6 cm; Width 11.5 cm; Depth 9 cm

Coffee Cup: Height 7.5 cm; Width 9.5 cm; Depth 7.5 cm

Further photographs are available.

This early nineteenth-century Regency period cabinet trio originates from the Coalport John Rose period between 1811 and 1820. The set comprises a scalloped saucer, a wider teacup, and an upright coffee cup, all fashioned from white porcelain with a deep cobalt blue ground, hand-painted white rose reserves with green foliage, and rich gilt trellis overlay and gilding. Notable details include the angular handles on the cups, the scalloped rims, and the intricate floral vignettes painted on both the exterior panels and the interior walls of the cups. The set spans 15 cm wide and 15 cm deep with a maximum height of 8.5 cm. In a contemporary home, these decorative ceramic pieces suit display on an enclosed bookshelf in a dining room or drawing room.

FAQs

Regency Coalport porcelain produced during the John Rose period is characterized by elaborate gilding, deep cobalt blue glaze, and delicate hand-painted botanical panels. Designs from this era often feature neoclassical motifs, intricate lattice gilding, and distinctive handle shapes such as the angular London handle.

During the early nineteenth century, English manufacturers crafted pieces using soft-paste porcelain or early bone china compositions. The decorations were applied by hand using mineral enamel paints for floral vignettes, followed by liquid mercury gilding or leaf gold fired onto the glaze.

Authentic John Rose Coalport pieces from 1800 to 1820 are frequently unmarked, requiring identification through handle forms, translucent paste quality, and specific pattern arrangements. Comparing gilded lattice patterns, handle geometry, and foot rim construction against documented factory pattern books helps verify attribution.

A porcelain cabinet trio is best styled on open shelving, inside glazed china cabinets, or atop a console table alongside minimalist modern decor to highlight its rich colours and gold detail. Position the saucer upright behind the teacup and coffee cup to display the full motif without crowding.

Gilded porcelain should be cleaned gently using warm water and mild soap with a soft microfiber cloth, avoiding immersion if hair crackles are present. Never subject early nineteenth-century ceramics to dishwashers, abrasive sponges, or chemical polish, as these wear away hand-applied leaf gilding.
