This nineteenth-century Aesthetic Movement library table is made of ebonised wood with gilt detailing, featuring a leather inset top and brass castors. The black framework is accented with gold-painted fluted mouldings on the turned legs, which terminate in small brass wheels at the base. Scuffs and surface wear appear across the dark polished timber and the aged leather writing panel, indicating decades of regular use. Two frieze drawers are integrated into the front rail, fitted with plain flush faces beneath a narrow gilded edge. The entire structure measures 74 cm high, 130 cm wide, and 66 cm deep, providing a compact writing surface for a private study. Placed within a gentleman's library, a home office, or a traditional study, it serves as a functional writing desk or display table against a wall or in the centre of the room.

Originating in the late nineteenth century, Aesthetic Movement furniture emphasised craftsmanship and artistic form, frequently incorporating delicate proportions, Anglo-Japanese influences, ebonised woods, and subtle gilt detailing.

These tables were typically constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany or fruitwood, stained black to imitate ebony, and detailed with gilt fluting, brass castors, and leather writing inserts.

Look for genuine age-related surface wear to the ebonised finish, hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, original brass castors, and natural oxidisation on underlying metalwork and timber.

Position the table as a focal point in a home office or living room, pairing dark wood tones with light neutral walls, contemporary task lighting, and tailored upholstery.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh solvent cleaners that degrade the ebonised layer, and keep the leather insert conditioned with specialist wax polish.
