Antique William IV Figured Mahogany 14 Seater Extending Dining Table

19th century
Description

A superb William IV figured mahogany extending dining table dating to circa 1835, with wonderfully elegant proportions and an exceptionally handsome classical design.

The table has a beautifully figured mahogany top with softly rounded corners and a moulded edge, displaying the rich colour, depth and attractive natural figuring of the timber.

A particularly distinctive feature is the design of the four solid mahogany legs. Beautifully shaped and turned in the bold yet elegant William IV manner, each has a substantial turned collar beneath the table, an unusual sculpted and lobed upper section and a long vase-shaped taper, finishing with further rounded turning and brass castors. The flowing, almost architectural profile gives the table tremendous character without being overly ornate, creating a design that is both substantial and remarkably graceful.

The clean expanse of figured mahogany, restrained decoration and sculptural legs give the table a timeless appearance. Although unmistakably a fine English table of the William IV period, its simplicity and strong proportions allow it to sit equally successfully within a traditional dining room or a very modern interior.

The table extends from a practical six-seater size to an impressive 301 cm long table capable of comfortably seating up to 14 people. It retains all three original mahogany extension leaves, comprising two 41 cm leaves and one larger 67.5 cm leaf, allowing a choice of configurations according to the number of guests.

The original winding handle is also present, operating the extending mechanism to open the table for the insertion of the leaves.

Condition report:

In very good antique condition with minor marks and variations consistent with age and use. The mahogany has a beautiful rich colour and attractive figuring throughout. The table retains its three original extension leaves, winding handle and extending mechanism.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Produced during the reign of King William IV from 1830 to 1837, these tables mark a transition between Regency lightness and Victorian weight, typically featuring substantial turned legs, telescopic extending mechanisms, and figured mahogany veneers.

Craftsmen used dense mahogany veneers over solid timber frames, combining hand-cut joinery with cast iron or brass winding mechanisms and brass castors to allow smooth expansion.

Authentic examples feature heavy turned or carved legs, original brass castors, winding handle apertures at the table end, and individual leaf supports consistent with 1830s joinery techniques.

A substantial mahogany dining table can be placed centrally in a spacious room alongside modern upholstered dining chairs, neutral walls, and contemporary pendant lighting to create contrast against the dark timber.

Surface finishes should be protected using heat-resistant mats, avoided from direct sunlight exposure, and routinely polished with specialized beeswax applied along the natural wood grain.
