This nineteenth-century William IV dining table is made of mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and brass hardware. The rectangular top has rounded corners, a double-moulded edge, and a deep apron with carved rounded corners, resting on turned, ring-turned, and fluted tapering legs that finish on brass castors. The table includes its two original leaves and a wind-out mechanism with its original handle. It measures 73 cm high, 270 cm wide, and 122 cm deep. Placed in a dining room, this table provides a practical surface for family meals and dinner parties. The classic timber construction and traditional turned legs suit formal dining spaces and large country house interiors, accommodating multiple chairs around its perimeter for everyday dining and hosting guests.

William IV dining tables, produced roughly between 1830 and 1837, mark a transition from delicate Regency forms to heavier, bolder proportions. They typically feature solid mahogany construction, thick tops with rounded corners, and substantial turned or carved legs.

High-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany was the primary timber used during this period, valued for its density and deep grain pattern. Secondary components often included oak or pine for internal framing, alongside brass castors and metal leaf-extension mechanisms.

Authentic pieces display distinct transitional design elements, such as stout, turned legs with acanthus leaf or lotus carvings, robust aprons, and original brass wheel castors. Construction signs include hand-dovetailed joints on wooden runners and natural age-related patination on the timber underside.

A dark mahogany table acts as an anchoring focal point in minimalist or modern dining spaces. Pairing heavy 19th-century timber with mid-century or modern dining chairs creates a balanced contrast between historic architecture and modern form.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish fading.
