Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Opaline glass was predominantly produced in France and Britain during the nineteenth century as an affordable alternative to porcelain. These shades were crafted to diffuse the harsh glare of paraffin and oil lamp flames while providing a decorative surface for hand-painted enamel artwork.

These shades were hand-blown or pressed using opaque white milk glass containing bone ash or tin oxide to create a semi-translucent, milky appearance. Artisans applied enamel paints and gilded detailing onto the cooled surface before firing the piece a second time to set the decoration.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit minor hand-painting variations, light wear around the fitter neck rim where the brass gallery sat, and subtle pontil marks or hand-finished rim contours. Unlike modern reproductions, true nineteenth-century enamel painting shows depth and faint brushstrokes under magnification.

An opaline shade can be converted into a ceiling pendant light using modern brass electrical fitments above a kitchen island or dining nook. It serves as a soft, characterful accent piece that bridges traditional period features with updated contemporary decor.

Clean the glass gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical solvents, abrasive pads, or immersion in hot water, as harsh cleaning methods can strip delicate painted enamels and gilding from the glass surface.
