An 18th-century Dutch marquetry centre table fashioned from walnut with fruitwood veneer and brass hardware presents a warm brown colour palette. The piece is decorated throughout with intricate floral marquetry inlay across the single drawer front, the shapely apron, and the slender cabriole legs ending in pad feet, accompanied by decorative brass drop handles and a central keyhole escutcheon. Surface characteristics include notable patination, minor losses to the marquetry, old splits, and an old restoration to one of the legs. Measuring 72.5 cm in height, 80.5 cm in width, and 41.5 cm in depth, the proportions suit placement in a foyer center or as a decorative accent piece against a wall in a traditional living space. The design combines utility with elaborate ornamentation, providing surface display space and a single storage drawer for daily accessories.

Marquetry is the decorative woodworking technique of applying thin pieces of contrasting veneer to a structural frame to create detailed floral motifs, geometric patterns, or figurative scenes, which was widely produced across Europe during the 18th century.

Craftsmen typically constructed the secondary core using solid oak or pine, then layered the surface with fine veneers such as walnut, kingwood, fruitwoods, and occasionally ivory or bone to produce distinct tonal contrasts.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-sawn veneers of slightly irregular thickness, natural timber shrinkage marks along grain lines, and original brass fittings exhibiting genuine age-related oxidisation.

Position the table as a focal point in an entryway or living room, pairing its detailed inlay work with understated modern ceramics or simple sculptural objects to balance historic detail with contemporary lines.

Position the item away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to avoid veneer lifting, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and periodically apply a microcrystalline wax polish to protect the finish.
