Arts and Crafts Oak Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A nice example of a small arts and crafts style occasional table dating from the early 20th Century. It is made from oak with a rectangular top set on four tapering legs with a shelf below. The top has nicely inlaid ebonised circles in each corner and a decorative pattern in the middle.

It is in good original condition with a lovely rich colour and patina. There are some minor surface marks commensurate with age and use and a few minor shrinkage splits but nothing detrimental and it is strong and sturdy. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it is ready for use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against mass industrialisation. It prioritised hand craftsmanship, visible joinery, native timbers such as oak, and clean geometric forms with minimal decorative inlay.

Pieces were typically constructed from solid oak, walnut, or ash using traditional cabinetmaking techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, exposed pegs, and hand-carved or ebony inlay details.

Authentic items show signs of traditional joinery, rich grain patterns in quartersawn oak, understated geometric or botanical inlays, and functional elements like lower tiers or square-cut legs without excessive ornamentation.

Position the table alongside modern upholstered seating or minimalist neutral tones to highlight the warm timber tones and geometric structural lines of the wood.

Maintain the surface by regularly dusting with a soft cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
